### Summary
These positions are located within the VA Black Hills Health Care System in Hot Springs, SD. The Social Services Assistant provides coverage of the Hot Springs Domiciliary complex and oversees operation of Domiciliary Quarters including assigning ward duties, holding ward meetings, conducts regular, recurring building and safety inspections in all areas of the Domiciliary including all patient wards, auditorium, laundry room, arts & crafts and recreation.

### Responsibilities
The major duties and responsibilities include:
* Conducts regular rounds and inspections of all areas including monitoring of residents in dining hall and other areas throughout the Domiciliary;
* Monitors refrigerators for temperatures (via monitoring software), cleanliness and removing outdated, spoiled or improperly stored items;
* Observes patients for cleanliness and appropriate behavior, reports and documents discrepancies for corrective action to the multidisciplinary treatment team and Domiciliary Care;
* Identifies behaviors or medical conditions that require intervention and takes appropriate action (such as performing BLS or calling the appropriate code);
* Reconciles logs and accountability books and maintains rolodex of admitted veterans;
* Provides continuous monitoring of radio and pager transmissions;
* Monitors entrance camera for any problems or assistance needed and views closed circuit cameras for possible disturbances in the Domiciliary;
* Obtains breathalyzer and urine drops on designated patients and escorts any patient with positive breathalyzer to urgent care area;
* Schedules veterans for groups, classes and individual appointments and documents in veterans electronic progress notes;
* Responds as part of the team to an emergency and assists patients to urgent care;
* Verifies accuracy of computer reports regarding bed status of each patient within the Domiciliary;
* Documents progress, findings, concerns or participation in classes in the record and completes encounters;
* Participates in shift change meetings with the oncoming shift or receives report from the outgoing shift; and
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
**Work Schedule:** 2 vacancies; Full-time (40 hours per week) - Incumbent will be assigned to one primary work shift (day, evening or night). However, he/she will at times be required to work an alternate shift to accommodate patient care needs. Incumbent will also be required to work weekends and holidays.

**English Language Proficiency:** In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. **~AND~**
**In addition to the English Language Proficiency, to qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following:**
**Experience:**You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Social Services Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes serving as a group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; serving as a counselor in a youth summer camp; serving as an instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; performing work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; serving as a group activities leader in the Armed Services; serving as a unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. **~OR~**
**Education:**You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the Social Services Assistant position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or, (c) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. (The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. **~OR~**
**Combination:**You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements for this grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

### Additional information
**Physical Requirements:** The work is sedentary; however, walking, bending, climbing stairs, stooping and lifting less than 50 pounds is required to perform patient care activities and clear lockers. The work is primarily performed within the confines of the Domiciliary, but requires visits to all areas of the Domiciliary. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn when potential for contact with bodily fluids.
**Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:**Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
